An undersized VPS does not break on the day you order it. It holds up for two or three months, then the site slows down around 10 a.m., the ERP server gets killed by the kernel during month-end close, and nobody can say whether the problem is the code, the database, or the 2 GB of RAM that got picked because the offer was the cheapest one on the page.

On paper, VPS Morocco 2026 offers all look alike: a vCPU count, some gigabytes of RAM, a disk, and “unlimited” traffic. The decision actually rests on those four numbers plus two less visible ones: where the machine runs, and what happens the day you need the next tier up. Both are negotiable before you sign, not after the first incident.

VPS, dedicated server, managed cloud: the real difference

A VPS is a slice of a physical machine, carved up by a hypervisor. You get root, your own operating system, your own ports, and you share the processor, the disk and the network card with other customers on the same host. A dedicated server is the whole machine: no noisy neighbours, a noticeably bigger invoice, and exactly the same administration work. Managed cloud does not change the technology, it changes who does that work.

So the VPS vs dedicated server question is not primarily about power. It is about who answers the phone when the disk fills up at 2 a.m. For an SME, a VPS stays the right answer until one of these three signals shows up.

  • Sustained disk I/O that shared storage can no longer absorb: a heavy transactional database, nightly reindexing, bulk PDF generation.
  • A contractual or sector requirement for physical isolation, imposed by a client or an auditor.
  • A VPS bill that, after several upgrades, has caught up with the price of a comparable dedicated box.

Sizing a VPS: RAM, vCPU, storage and bandwidth

Sizing starts with a measurement, not an estimate. If you already have hosting, you own the useful data: average and peak memory use, CPU load, the real size of the database, monthly outbound traffic. An hour of htop during your busiest window, plus free -m and df -h, beats any provider comparison table.

VPS Morocco 2026: how to choose the right size before you rent

If the project does not exist yet, reason component by component: operating system, web server, database, application engine, scheduled jobs. Each one has a memory appetite you can bound.

RAM comes first

This is the resource that kills a server most abruptly. A saturated CPU slows things down; saturated memory brings in the OOM killer, which usually picks the largest process, meaning MySQL or MariaDB. You find your application throwing a database connection error, and a restart hides the cause for another two weeks.

The method: add the database buffer pool (it should hold the part of your data people actually touch), the maximum number of PHP-FPM children or application workers multiplied by the average process size (measure it, it varies wildly with the extensions loaded), roughly 1 GB for the system and logs, then keep 25 to 30 percent headroom. On an ERP, workers scale with vCPU count and each one holds several hundred megabytes, which is why an Odoo instance on 4 GB always ends up in trouble.

vCPU: the count matters less than the neighbours

Two dedicated vCPU often beat four shared ones. The number to know is steal time: the st column in top or vmstat, which measures how long your virtual machine wanted to work but was waiting for the host to hand the CPU back. Anything above a few percent on a sustained basis is not your code, it is oversubscription at the provider. Ask in writing before you order: dedicated or shared vCPU, and what oversubscription ratio.

Most web applications are limited by memory and disk, not CPU. The exceptions are predictable: image processing, transcoding, OCR, large exports, builds.

Storage and bandwidth

For a database, IOPS matter more than gigabytes. An NVMe and a SATA volume of the same size do not give the same response time under concurrent writes. On capacity, plan for double your current data to cover eighteen to twenty-four months, plus room for logs and temporary files. Backups do not live on that same disk: a hypervisor snapshot is not a backup, which is the whole point of a backup and disaster recovery setup kept properly separate from production.

“Unlimited” traffic is almost always fair-use traffic, described in the provider’s terms. Read them if you serve video or a lot of images, and budget for a CDN rather than a bigger pipe. With hyperscalers, egress is billed per gigabyte, which always surprises someone after a successful campaign.

Moroccan or international VPS: latency, sovereignty and CNDP

For a visitor in Casablanca, a server in Morocco answers faster than one in Europe, by a few tens of milliseconds of network round trip. On a page that chains forty sequential requests, that shows. On a properly cached application, it usually disappears behind page generation time. Before you pay for proximity, check where your response time actually goes.

Choosing VPS hosting in Morocco is usually justified by other arguments: billing in dirhams with no exchange-rate exposure or international card fees, support reachable during Moroccan business hours in French or Arabic, and data that stays in the country. Going international buys you a wider catalogue, lower prices and more mature automation tooling (APIs, snapshots, images, infrastructure as code).

On compliance, Law 09-08 governs transfers of personal data abroad: depending on the destination country, a CNDP authorisation may be required, and the processing has to be declared either way. Host where you want, but know exactly which country holds the data and check the applicable formalities on the CNDP website. If data location is a structural constraint for you, our comparison of sovereign cloud options in Morocco covers the tier above a plain VPS.

VPS Morocco 2026 price ranges by usage profile

Monthly orders of magnitude, excluding first-year promotions and long commitments, to be confirmed on the actual quote when you order.

  • Brochure site or moderate-traffic WordPress: 2 vCPU, 2 to 4 GB RAM, 40 to 80 GB SSD. Roughly 80 to 250 MAD per month with an international provider, often 200 to 500 MAD with a Moroccan host.
  • Business application or ecommerce with a catalogue: 4 vCPU, 8 GB, 150 to 200 GB NVMe. In the range of 300 to 700 MAD internationally, 600 to 1,400 MAD locally.
  • Odoo or Dolibarr style ERP, 20 to 60 users: 6 to 8 vCPU, 16 to 32 GB, 300 GB and up, with the database on its own instance if the budget allows. Between 700 and 2,000 MAD internationally, 1,500 to 4,000 MAD in Morocco.
  • Managed administration: with no sysadmin in house, budget 1,500 to 5,000 MAD per month depending on scope, including patching, monitoring, tested backups and on-call.

Those amounts are one line of your hosting cost. The rest (offsite backups, certificates, control panel licences, monitoring, a staging environment) is laid out in our cloud hosting budget guide for Morocco.

Oversizing out of caution, undersizing out of thrift

Both mistakes cost money, in different ways. Oversizing is comfortable and quiet: you pay three times the price for idle RAM, and more importantly you hide the real problem. An unindexed query scanning 400,000 rows is still slow on a big machine, it just becomes tolerable, so nobody ever fixes it.

Undersizing gets paid in incidents instead. A cheap VPS in Morocco with 1 vCPU and 2 GB will carry a brochure site, not a business application with five concurrent users and a daily Excel export. Look mainly at what the cheapest plan leaves out: no snapshots, backup as a paid add-on, no availability commitment, ticket-only support with no defined response time. Two billed evenings of firefighting wipe out a year of savings.

Upgrading without downtime: decide this before you sign

The upgrade path gets prepared on order day, not on the day the server saturates. A few points worth clarifying in writing with the provider.

  • Is a resize done in place, with a reboot of a few minutes, or does it mean a migration to another machine?
  • Can the disk grow without a reinstall? It almost never shrinks, so do not buy 1 TB “just in case”.
  • Do you keep your IP address, or is there a floating IP you can point at a new instance?
  • Is a snapshot taken automatically before the operation, and have you ever tested a full restore?

On your side, the real insurance is making the server rebuildable. A Docker Compose file or a few versioned Ansible roles turn a two-day move into a two-hour one, and keep you free to change provider. Drop your DNS TTL to five minutes the day before, and switch during a genuinely quiet window rather than at 9 a.m. If the project is a change of host rather than a simple tier bump, the timelines and cost items are broken down in our piece on cloud migration in Morocco.

The checklist before you rent

  1. Measurement of current load: peak RAM, steal time, database size, monthly egress.
  2. Nature of the vCPU, dedicated or shared, and the stated oversubscription ratio.
  3. Storage type and write performance, not just capacity.
  4. The actual bandwidth rules and the price of traffic beyond the included allowance.
  5. Hosting country, and the matching CNDP formalities for personal data.
  6. Backups: frequency, location outside the VPS, retention, restore test.
  7. Procedure and downtime involved in an upgrade.
  8. Availability commitment and support response time, written into the contract.
  9. Who administers the server day to day: you, a provider, or nobody.

Common questions

How much RAM does a WordPress site in Morocco need?

A brochure site with page caching configured properly runs on 2 GB. Once you add WooCommerce, a page builder and plugins doing background work, 4 GB is more comfortable. The deciding factors are the number of PHP-FPM children you allow and the size of the MySQL buffer pool, so measure rather than extrapolate.

Is a VPS at 50 MAD a month enough?

For staging, a test environment, an internal tool or a landing page, yes. For production with a database and people working in it, check three things first: the steal time you observe on the machine, whether backup is included or billed separately, and what response time support commits to.

Do you need a Moroccan VPS server to comply with Law 09-08?

No, hosting abroad is not prohibited. Transferring personal data outside Morocco is regulated and may require a CNDP authorisation depending on the destination country, on top of declaring the processing. Local hosting simplifies the file, it does not remove the paperwork. Check your specific case on the CNDP website.

When should you move from VPS to dedicated?

When disk performance becomes the limiting factor despite an optimised database, when a client commitment requires physical isolation, or when your VPS price has caught up with a comparable dedicated server. Before that point, moving the database to its own instance often buys more than going dedicated.

Size it before you order it
